Green and Sustainability Research Profile – Bishkek State University (BSU)
Green Deal Center Hub / Erasmus+ GDCAU
Bishkek State University (BSU) integrates environmental sustainability, green digital innovation, and biocultural diversity across teaching, research, and institutional management. As a partner in the Erasmus+ GDCAU project, BSU hosts one of Kyrgyzstan’s two Green Deal Center Hubs, advancing education and research aligned with the European Green Deal and the United Nation’s SDGs.

2. Key Research Areas & Projects Beyond GDCAU
• GREEN and Digital Universities for Sustainable Development of Kyrgyzstan (GREENKG, Erasmus+ Capacity Building, 2023–2026) https://greenkg.vercel.app/
This national project naturally aligns with the European Green Deal and Kyrgyz national strategy to reinforce ecological awareness and develop and adapt a green and sustainable approach system in higher education institutions (HEIs).
- Objectives:
- Increasing the knowledge and capacity of HEIs to build and implement green and digital university policies, by supporting the definition, implementation, and monitoring of reform processes.
- Development of a national Green and Digital University Model.
- Enhancing the educational innovation capacity of Kyrgyz universities by implementing green policy and digitalization to increase their competitiveness in the realm of sustainability and inclusive growth.
- Increasing the awareness of HEIs’ social responsibility in the context of the global movement to a Green Economy, climate adaptation, and demographic changes.
• Research Themes: Green economy, renewable energy transition, waste management and recycling, digitalization of universities, circular economy, biocultural diversity, ethno-ecology of Central Asia, eco-tourism development
3. Institutional Green & Sustainability Priorities
-Establishment of the Green and Digital Office (2023) and the development of a national green and digital university model.
-Establishment of the Green Deal Center Hub (2025) to translate the principles of the European Green Deal into locally relevant education, research, and community initiatives, by connecting academia, government, and industry to accelerate sustainable development, foster green skills, and strengthen EU–Central Asia collaboration on climate and environmental action.
-Integration of ESG competencies into curricula and elective courses (e.g., Green Economy and Sustainable Development, Eco-tourism).
-Ongoing development of the Biocultural Diversity Research Center in partnership with NABU Kyrgyzstan and international universities to promote research on biodiversity and ethno-ecology in Kyrgyzstan.

5. Strengths & Contributions
BSU serves as a national hub for integrating sustainability, digitalization, and biocultural diversity research in higher education, linking research, policy, and community action to accelerate Kyrgyzstan’s green transition. Student and faculty ESG initiatives include Enactus and Aalam, demonstrating strong connections with conservation NGOs.
