About the department 

The specialty "Sociology" and the corresponding department was created by the Rector's order №81 of September 7, 1993, thanks to the initiative and with the active participation of Doctor of Philosophy, Professor of Sociology K. Isaev.

The specialty "Political Science" and the corresponding department was established in 1994. Such professors and associate professors as K. Isaev, A. Asanbaev, H. Abduzhabarov, K. Sultanbekov, B. Seyitbaev and others stood at the origins of the opening of the department.

Since 2022, in connection with the structural reorganization of the university, the training of bachelors and masters in sociology and political science is carried out on the basis of the newly formed Department of Sociology and Political and Legal Disciplines.

In 1993-1994, the first enrollment of applicants in Sociology and Political Science was made in the history of the sovereign Kyrgyz Republic. Since 2012, the department started training sociologists and political scientists under the bachelor's degree system. The 2021-2022 academic year marked the 26th graduating class of sociology and political science majors overall, and the third graduating class of undergraduate majors in these fields. Master's degree in sociology and political science has been prepared since 2007.

This year the Department of Sociology and Political and Legal Disciplines is celebrating its 30th anniversary. The department today represents the first and senior sociological and political science school in the republic. By this time, more than 1,000 qualified sociologists and political scientists (including graduates of the correspondence department) had been trained, who work productively in various fields of economics, politics, management and national economy, as well as in foreign countries.

Graduates of the department today are in demand as specialists and analysts in many fields of activity: in central and local government authorities, large international consulting companies, commercial organizations, research centers, educational institutions, commercial organizations, mass media, NGOs, etc.

The activity of the department is provided by highly qualified specialists in the field of sociology and political science. These are mainly BSU graduates with relevant academic degrees, extensive pedagogical and practical experience in research work.

Educational activities

The department prepares bachelors and masters in "Sociology" and "Political Science". In addition, training of postgraduate students, doctoral students on full-time and part-time forms of education (co-scholarship) is carried out.

The aim of the educational program is to train specialists in the field of sociology and political science, meeting the requirements of the modern labor market.

In keeping with this goal and the mission of the university, the program addresses the following major tasks:

  • to promote the development of personal qualities in students: inner creative freedom; the ability to work individually and in a team, the ability to critically reflect and analyze the ongoing socio-economic and political events; the formation of their own point of view (vision of events), and independent critical development of attitudes, self-analysis (especially professional actions); social responsibility, to remember that its recommendations, conclusions, actions can have a significant impact on the lives of individuals, social groups.
  • to promote the formation of general cultural (universal) competences: a comprehensive idea of the history of the development of society and the Kyrgyz state; formation of ideas about basic social values and relevant relationships; features of organizational culture; stable ideas about the categories of morality, social well-being, inequality; promotion of linguistic culture, including professional languages
  • to contribute to the formation of professional competencies: meaningful understanding of the content and mechanisms of society development; mastery of professional terminology and use of conceptual apparatus; knowledge of the main stages and the possibility of organizing sociological research; mastery of various methods of sociological research; processing and analysis of sociological information using computer statistical programs to make recommendations in economic, political or social spheres.
