History of the Department

Department of Social Work and Practical Psychology at the Faculty of Social and Psychological Sciences of the K. Karasaev Bishkek State University is one of the leading and most promising departments. The department employs 25 highly qualified lecturers specialising in social work and psychology.

The department is a member of the International Federation of Social Workers and serves as an educational, methodological and research centre for the training of undergraduates, postgraduates and doctoral students in the fields of ‘Social Work’ and ‘Psychology’.

The department has extensive experience in international cooperation with foreign universities, including Frankfurt University (Germany), Nurnberg University (Germany), and the University of Copenhagen (Denmark), as well as with universities in Russia, China, Kazakhstan and elsewhere.

The department runs the ‘Umut’ centre for psychological counselling and training, and the ‘Akak’ social centre.

The head of the department is Dr Erik Sadykovich Orozaliev, Professor and Honoured Scientist of the Kyrgyz Republic, and President of the Association of Social Work and Practical Psychology of the Kyrgyz Republic.

Students can study the following programs:

• «Social Work» (Bachelor’s degree) -  4 years;
• «Psychology» (Bachelor’s degree) -  4 years;
• «Social Work» (Master’s) - 2 years;;
• «Psychology» (Master’s) ) – 2 years;;
• «Psychology» (Master’s) - – non-specialist 2.5 years;
• «Psychology» PhD – 3 years.

Graduates from our department help people facing difficult life situations by providing counselling, running seminars and delivering socio-psychological training.

As part of their studies, students undertake work placements within the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Migration, the Ministry of the Interior, the Border Guard Service, the State Correctional Service of the Kyrgyz Republic, as well as in municipal and district social services, schools and rehabilitation centers.

In addition to attending lectures, students of the department successfully complete their exams, take part in student research conferences, academic competitions, and socio-cultural events organized by the university.
