Call for applications for participation in the PhD program for the international project SOLID (2025–2029)

About the SOLID project

The international project SOLID (Social work and strengthening NGOs in development cooperation to treat drug addiction) is aimed at developing social work as a professional and research field and strengthening cooperation with non-governmental organizations in the field of prevention and treatment of drug addiction. The project is implemented with the participation of leading universities and research centers in Germany, China and Central Asian countries. Within the framework of SOLID, special attention is paid to working with vulnerable groups of the population, such as people who use drugs, PLHIV and people in correctional institutions.

The main directions of the SOLID project:

  • Social work and drug addiction treatment (focus on opioid and alcohol addiction, including psychosocial support)
  • Social work in the field of infectious diseases (HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, hepatitis C) with an emphasis on prevention and harm reduction programs.
  • Social work with persons in correctional institutions

Conditions of participation

Candidates who meet the following requirements are eligible to participate in the SOLID PhD program:

· A master's degree in a relevant field (social work or psychology);

· Experience in teaching at a higher educational institution in the fields of “Social Work” and “Psychology”;

· Proficiency in English at a level not lower than B2;

· Experience in research or practical work in the social sphere, drug addiction or related fields is welcomed;

· Candidates undertake to complete the preparation and defense of a candidate or PhD dissertation on one of the designated topics during the project implementation period;

· Preference is given to candidates with official employment on the university staff and experience in developing educational programs in the areas of "Social Work" and "Psychology" at BSU named after K. Karasaev.

Application and selection process

Required documents:

  1. Resume (CV) in English
  2. Copies of educational diplomas;
  3. A short research proposal in English (2-3 pages) related to one of the SOLID project areas;
  4. Proof of teaching experience (certificate or letter of recommendation from the university indicating work experience).

Application deadline: 4 July 2025.

Competitive selection.

All applications received will be evaluated by a selection committee created by BSU named after K. Karasayev and the University of Nuremberg. Based on the results of the preliminary selection, an interview (offline) with applicants will be held on July 7, 2025. The results of the competition will be announced by July 15, 2025.

Selected participants will be offered admission to the PhD program starting in the 2025/2026 academic year. Participation in the program involves conducting research on the project topic, regular training, teaching at BSU named after K. Karasaev, and participating in organizing events related to the SOLID goal.
