Department of Korean Philology Welcome to the Department of Korean Philology
The Department of Korean Philology of the Faculty of Oriental Studies and International Relations of BSU began its history in 1991, when the first Faculty of Oriental Studies and International Relations in the history of Kyrgyzstan was organized.
Later, in order to improve the quality of teaching the Korean language, the department was reorganized from the Department of Philology of the Far East Countries into the Department of Korean Philology in accordance with the order of the Minister of Education No. 330-1 dated 29.06.1996 "On the transfer of training specialists in Oriental Studies and Oriental Languages, and the order of BSU No. 170 dated 30.08.2004. When preparing the curricula, according to which students of the Korean department of BSU study, the curricula of the leading Oriental studies universities of the CIS countries and advanced foreign experience were taken into account. The term of study is 4 years for a bachelor's degree, and 2 years for a master's degree. Upon completion of the course of study, Bachelors and Masters are awarded a qualification in the direction of "Linguistics" and in the direction of "Oriental Studies, African Studies".
According to the curriculum of the Korean department, students study Korean as a main language and English as an additional language, in addition, in their specialty, respectively, history, literature, culture, economics, foreign policy and religious history of Korea, attend special courses, participate in seminars.
Extracurricular activities are also provided in various clubs on calligraphy, studying Korean songs and dances, in particular, in addition to traditional folklore, the K-pop direction is popular with students; if necessary, additional clubs are conducted to help students prepare for passing various international tests on the level of proficiency in the Korean language.
The department has organized dance groups of Korean dances and songs, which have repeatedly won various inter-university competitions and taken prizes; some students have been awarded prizes for the best acting skills when performing skits in Korean at inter-university competitions.
To consolidate knowledge and practice the language, students and teachers of the department annually hold cultural events and scientific and practical seminars. The methodological base is constantly developing, the library fund of the department is expanding. When working with students, an individual approach is selected for each group for more productive learning.
With the support of the Education Center at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Kyrgyz Republic, teachers and students annually organize a quiz on the Korean language at BSU, and invite all republican universities where the Korean language is taught to participate. At the quiz on the Korean language, students can simultaneously test their erudition in the field of Korean studies.
Mission of the Department of Korean Philology Bishkek State University named after K. Karasaev has a policy of ensuring the quality of education approved by the Academic Council, which includes a mission, strategic and current plans, educational goals, and a quality management system.
The quality assurance policy of BSU, approved by the Rector on May 11, 2017, is aimed at training highly qualified specialists in the field of humanitarian education in the Kyrgyz Republic and occupying a leading position in the Eurasian educational space. Taking into account the Concept of Education Development of the Kyrgyz Republic until 2020, the Strategy for the Development of Education of the Kyrgyz Republic dated March 23, 2012 No. 201, as well as other regulatory legal acts governing the sphere of higher education in the country, the Concept of Development of BSU named after K. Karasaev was developed, which was approved by the decision of the Academic Council on March 11, 2017.
The mission of BSU was re-approved at the UC (minutes No. 9 of June 27, 2018) in the following version: “the mission of the university is to train specialists with secondary and higher professional humanitarian and socio-economic education who meet the national interests of the country and are competitive in the modern labor market.”
Based on the adopted mission, strategic and current plans have been developed and approved that meet the needs of stakeholders. The policy in the field of ensuring the quality of education implements the strategic goal of the university - the formation of a competitive innovative university occupying a leading position in the Eurasian educational space.
The strategic vision of BSU is a university that occupies a stable leading position in the Eurasian educational space and has high international recognition. BSU is guided by the principles of dynamic development, close integration into the international educational space and international recognition, flexibility, accessibility and demand in the rapidly changing labor market.
To implement this mission, BSU has all the necessary resources. Thus, the strategic goal of BSU is the development of interrelated areas of the university's work in the field of education, science and innovation, the formation of university scientific and educational activities that implement professional education in joint work with all interested parties, meeting the requirements of innovative development of the economy, modern needs of the individual, society and the state.
To achieve the strategic goal, it is planned to implement the following areas of activity:

Solving problems in the above-mentioned areas of activity allows us to achieve high-quality learning outcomes, raise the prestige of faculties, especially in terms of providing educational services, and increase the number of excellent students studying in the master's degree programs of faculties and postgraduate studies at the university.
The mission of the Department of Korean Philology, in turn, is accepted and consists of three components: training qualified competitive specialists in the field of Korean philology and Korean studies, in the direction of "Oriental and African Studies" and "Linguistics", training specialists with professional knowledge of the Korean language, since the basis of oriental education is professional mastery of the oriental language, education of an active, energetic person with high cultural and moral values.
Educational Objectives of the Department of Korean Philology The educational goals of the Department of Korean Philology were adopted on the basis of the mission of the Department of Korean Philology in two components: obtaining higher professionally profiled education that allows the graduate to successfully work in the chosen field of activity, possess universal and subject-specific competencies that contribute to his social mobility and stability in the labor market, the creation of a professionally oriented personality with a broad outlook and social tolerance.
Strategic Vision of the Department of Korean Philology The strategic vision of the Department of Korean Philology is that the department occupies a stable leading position in the university, the training is conducted not only strictly on the linguistic aspect, but also includes various aspects of Korean life, for a deeper understanding of the language and Korean studies in general. The department is also guided by the principles of dynamic development, cooperation with foreign educational institutions, appropriate response to the rapidly changing labor market, an individual and personal approach to training specialists for work in the Eurasian space. To implement its mission and vision, the Department of Korean Philology strives to expand the material base and improve educational and methodological resources.
